Daksha asked Soma to take a bath in the sea at the mouth of the river Saraswati and then to pray to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva pleased with his penance restored his light for half of the month. Hence the deity here is known as Someshwar or Somnath, Lord of the moon and the place as Prabhas. The Someshwar Mahadev temple stands tall among the temples of India. The construction of the present temple in Junagadh district began in 1950. It is the seventh temple built to commemorate the glory of Lord Somnath who was known as BhAiraveshwar in the Sa(ya Yug, Shravanikeshwar in Treta Yug and Shrigaleshwar in DwaparYug.

This impressive temple of Somanath came under the bother of the Muslims several times. In the year 722, Junamad, the Sindh Subedar attacked it for the first time and looted immeasurable items from its wealth. Prior appointment with the secretary of Gandhi ashram , a walking guided tour of 90 minute starts with a slide show and ends at the Library.
