Ahmedabad Gandhi Ashram - Sabarmati: The Sabarmati Ashram formerly known as Satyagraha Ashram was observer to many historical actions that shook up the British Empire. Gandhi ashram , Sabarmati was set up in 1917. It is situated about 5 km from the center of Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Ahmedabad Gandhi ashram is located  on the west bank of Sabarmati river.  The ashram was spread to an area of thirty-six acres. The name of Gandhi's own cottage in Gandhi ashram Ahmedabad is 'Hridaya Kunj'. Gandhi ashram Ahmedabad was also the center of Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violent struggle for India’s independence. Mahatma Gandhi dialogue in respect to Sabarmati ashram establishment was “ This is the right place for our activities to carry on the search for Truth and develop Fearlessness – for, on one side, are the iron bolts of the foreigners and on the other thunderbolts of Mother Nature.”.

Sabarmati Ashram have a museum with five units as – office, library, two photo galleries and an auditorium. It is possibly having the major number of original manuscripts of Gandhiji’s letters and articles. The museum has eight life-size color oil paintings and an exhibition on Gandhiji’s life “My life is my message” and “Gandhiji in Ahmedabad”. There is an documentation section in Sabarmati ashram which stores 34,066 letters written by Gandhiji, manuscripts of his 8,633 articles, negatives of 6,367 photographs, 134 reels of microfilms of his writings and 210 films on Gandhiji and the independence fight. The library has over 30,000 books, 155 letters of felicitation received by Gandhiji besides miscellaneous memorabilia comprising coins, postal stamps and the like.The Ashram remain open from 8.30 am to 6.00 pm throughout the year and admission is free. Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya, a small museum that includes excellent pictorial and written documentation, a library of Gandhian literature and paintings, and an immense archive of letters written by Gandhiji, every single one on the back of used paper. Prior appointment with the secretary of Gandhi ashram , a walking guided tour of 90 minute starts with a slide show and ends at the Library. The different sections to visit in Sabarmati ashram are - Magan Niwas, Upasana Mandir, Hriday Kunj, Vinoba Mira Kutir, Nandinil, Udyog Mandir, Somnath Chattralaya, Teacher’s Niwas, Gandhi in Ahmedabad, Painting Gallery, My life my message, Library and archives.
