Gujarat somnath temple:

Soma is the name for the moon, the son in-law of Daksha. Once Soma disregarded certain directions of his father-in-law Daksha. As a result Daksha became angry and cursed him, saying, "Thou shalt wane!" The moon, who used to shine in full splendour every night till then, started to shrink. However, before the curse brought about an absolute end to the moon, many a god appealed Daksha to take back his curse. Daksha asked Soma to take a bath in the sea at the mouth of the river Saraswati and then to pray to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva pleased with his penance restored his light for half of the month. Hence the deity here is known as Someshwar or Somnath, Lord of the moon and the place as Prabhas. The Someshwar Mahadev temple stands tall among the temples of India. The construction of the present temple in Junagadh district began in 1950. It is the seventh temple built to commemorate the glory of Lord Somnath who was known as BhAiraveshwar in the Sa(ya Yug, Shravanikeshwar in Treta Yug and Shrigaleshwar in DwaparYug.

Somnath Temple History:

This impressive temple of Somanath came under the bother of the Muslims several times. In the year 722, Junamad, the Sindh Subedar attacked it for the first time and looted immeasurable items from its wealth. The gorgeous statue of Somanath, can be seen from the middle because of the amazing magnetic power. Ghajni Mohammed, shattered this sculpture on Friday, the 11th of May 1025 AD. From then onwards, Ghajni Mohammed came to be branded as the “Statute Destroyer” (Iconoclast). On that day, he plundered and looted a wealth worth 18 crores. In 1297 AD, Allauddin Kkhiji sent his Sardar Altaf Khan to Somanath on a assignment of destroying and putting down the Somanath Mandir. The Somanath Temple was subjected to sequence of attacks initial in 1479 AD by Mohammad Begada, Mujaffar Shah, II, in 1503 AD, and finally by Aurangazeb, known to be the most prejudiced towards other religions, in 1701 AD, where in, the temple was totally destroyed, plundered and looted in a most horrible way. A large number of people were killed cruelly and a lot of money stolen. Chandra, (moon) was the primary one to receive the benefic benefit of Shri Somanath of Saurashtra, the Shiva pilgrimage, Agni Teerth and Surya Teerth. Then Chandra constructed a attractive golden temple and put a magnificent JyotirLinga in it, the first of its kind in India. recognized as prabhAsa kshetra, Somnath engaged a much respected place in the Hindu holy places. It finds many references in the  puranas& itihas.
