Parade ceremony known as beating the retreat’ ceremony begins with a high marching parade by the soldiers from India and Pakistan. Parade soldiers stands at attention on each side of the gate. After that, the important gates at the Wagah Border are opened aggressively.  The two soldiers move toward each other, exchange severe looks, confer out mimicked threats, and demonstrate anger. They shake hands and start to lower the Indian and Pakistani flags set on tall poles at the gates. All together with warrior-like stamping and gesturing. They execute the ceremony of “beating the retreat” (the lowering the flags) on their own sides of the border and closing the gates for the night. As on today, the ritual has been performed symmetrically by the two neighbors, but the aggression has been ameliorated through handshakes by the two duty officers. India has declared that on the Indian side, at least, the tone will be much less aggressive in future. The Pakistani guards - who have to be over six feet four inches so as to take part in the parade - put on huge black boots with metal horse-shoes on the heels for added resound. Their counterparts on the Indian side carry out their arrogant marching formations to hearty yells. The two sides open out their individual flags, folding them up after a curt handshake between the duty officers.

The Wagah Border position leftovers open daily from 10:00 am till the flag lowering ritual in the evening. For the Wagah Border observance, it is wise to arrive very well before sunset to capture a suitable seat in the open air theatre. Probablly before time of sunset, the flag lowering ceremony generally starts approximately 4:30 pm in winters and 5:30 pm in summers. the finest time to visit the Amritsar wagah border is throughout the months of October to March, as the climate is cool and pleasant.
